Leonardo DiCaprio Gives Big to Protect the Planet

loslatenIn recent years, Leonardo DiCaprio has been using his star power for the good of the planet by taking a stand for a number of environmental causes.

This week, DiCaprio was one of four celebrities to receive the Crystal Award at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. This award recognizes stars and artists who have taken it upon themselves to help create change for the good of our planet and its residents. DiCaprio received his award for his astounding leadership in tackling the current climate crisis.

As he took the stand to accept his award in front of a crowd that included world leaders, business chiefs, and campaigners, DiCaprio had this to say: “We simply cannot afford to allow the corporate greed of the coal, oil and gas industries to determine the future of humanity. Those entities with a financial interest in preserving this destructive system have denied, and even covered up the evidence of our changing climate.”

This isn’t the first time that the actor has stressed that it’s time for everybody to take responsibility in order to create hope for the future of our planet. The actor then added: “Enough is enough. You know better. The world knows better. History will place the blame for this devastation squarely at their feet.”

Yes, pretty amazing – but it gets better: DiCaprio announced that his foundation will be donating $15 million in grants towards environmental protection. Out of that amount, funding will be explicitly allocated to a project that will ensure the protection of 6.5 million acres of Sumatran rainforests that have been ravaged by the palm oil industry. The orangutans will definitely thank him for that!

We love nothing more than to see someone with as much star power as DiCaprio using their fame as a platform to talk about some of our planet’s most pressing issues. A big shout out to Leo for raising awareness for this incredibly pressing issue!
